Top 5 Honeymoon Destinations

Your honeymoon should be just as special as your wedding. It’s your chance to travel, relax, or go on adventures with just your spouse before your life as a married couple begins for real.

When thinking about where to go for your honeymoon, you literally have the whole world to choose from. Nonetheless, some places stand out as being the best honeymoon destinations.

1. The Caribbean

Your wedding will be one of the best days of your life, but the weeks leading up to it can be stressful (although less so if you have a wedding planner taking care of most of the details). If you feel like you’ll need to relax after your wedding, an exotic Caribbean island is a top choice.

Caribbean honeymoons allow you to spend your days lounging on a beach or being pampered at a spa. In fact, the islands are home to some of the best all-inclusive honeymoon resorts. The British Virgin Islands, St. Barts, Puerto Rico, and St. Martin are particularly great choices, but if there’s any other island you’d particularly like to visit, you can almost certainly find a resort offering honeymoon packages.

2. Greece

If you want to watch beautiful sunsets on sandy beaches, eat delicious food, and encounter stunning scenery wherever you go, Greece may be the best place for your honeymoon. You definitely won’t be disappointed in the weather if you travel during the spring or summer — spring is comfortably mild, whereas summers are hot and there is a low chance of rain from April to September.

Greece is home to several top honeymoon destinations, but Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini should be at the top of your list. Each has something different to offer.

Athens is packed with museums and archeological sites. At a minimum, you must visit the Acropolis (to see the Parthenon), the agora (the marketplace of ancient Athens), and the Olympieion (the largest temple in ancient Greece, dedicated to Zeus). In addition, Pláka neighborhood is especially popular with tourists for its pedestrian streets and colorful architecture, as is the flea market in Monastiraki. You may like to take a walking tour through downtown to see many of the sights at once — although you’ll still need to dedicate a couple more days to visit at least some of the museums.

Mykonos is one of the best-known Greek islands — famous for its fantastic beaches and pure white buildings. As you arrive at the harbor, you’ll see the seven white windmills that have become a signature of the island. During your time in Mykonos, you’ll be able to explore even more archeological sites, shop at the boutiques along Matogianni Street, and perhaps take a day trip to the Old Harbor, where you can visit a waterside called Little Venice, which has charming restaurants.

Santorini is also characterized by pure white buildings, but these are interspersed with blue-domed churches. The island is made striking by cliffs created from a volcanic crater and lava. Well known as a honeymoon destination, Santorini offers plenty in the way of relaxation, including hot springs and luxury resorts. If you’re feeling adventurous, you may like to explore the island by ATV — it’s a great way to fully appreciate the views.

With a honeymoon of 10 to 12 nights, you’ll have time to visit the capital and then take a ferry out to both islands. You could even include a few more honeymoon destinations in your trip. Wherever you go, you’ll be immersed in history and culture.

3. Italy

Like Greece, Italy is an ideal honeymoon destination for a trip lasting 10 to 12 nights. This gives you enough time to include a few places in your trip to experience everything from buzzing activity and high-fashion shopping to tranquil countryside and rustic villages.

Of course, Rome needs to be part of your Italian honeymoon, as it’s here that you’ll be able to visit famous landmarks like the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Sistine Chapel.

In less than a day, you can travel from Rome to the Amalfi Coast. A bus tour is a great way to see the entire coastline — and if you’re not driving, you’re free to take in all the views. Most tours make frequent stops for you to explore. You’ll find all sorts of little gems if you wander down the tiny streets. Consider staying in one of the medieval towns to see a different side of Italian culture.

End your trip in Florence. This city is packed with gorgeous architecture, the most significant being the expansive Duomo, the Uffizi Gallery, and the Ponte Vecchio: the first bridge built in the city and one that is still in full use today. Take advantage of the excellent climate by also visiting some of the gardens — there are several to choose from!

4. Mediterranean Cruise

Can’t decide between Greece and Italy? Take a Mediterranean cruise to see both, along with many other fascinating places. You’ll learn about the culture and history of a variety of European countries, enjoy constantly changing landscapes, and have the opportunity to relax at some of the most beautiful beaches the continent has to offer.

Plus, your home base will never be far away — you’ll have your own cabin and many luxuries on board to make your stay extra comfortable.

5. Hawaii

To mix outdoor adventure with romance, there’s no better option than Hawaii. This is definitely one of the best tropical honeymoon destinations — it has great weather all year round, pristine beaches, and misty waterfalls. If you and your spouse are sporty types, you could try activities like parasailing, shark cage diving, ATV rides, and zip lining. In the evenings, you can go on sailing tours, find entertainment at local venues, and have sunset dinners.

Whereas you could visit all eight of the main islands, this may become more exhausting than fun (unless you have plenty of time). For a trip lasting between seven and 10 nights, the best honeymoon places to visit are Maui, Oahu, and the Big Island.
